Vatican City

The independent Vatican City-state, on the other hand, came into existence on 11 February 1929 by the Lateran Treaty between the Holy See and Italy, which spoke of it as a new creation, not as a vestige of the much larger Papal States (756–1870), which had previously encompassed much of central Italy.

Vatican City is the world’s smallest country. The Vatican City State is the Holy See’s independent city-state enclaved within Rome, Italy, an area of 49 hectares (121 acres) and a population of about 805.

The Vatican City State was founded following the signing of the Lateran Pacts between the Holy See and Italy on February 11th, 1929.

With this pact Vatican City became Vatican City State.
