In 2017, she was sworn in as a United States Senator for California. She was announced as former vice president Joe Biden’s running mate in the 2020 election.

She holds an undergraduate degree from Howard University and a law degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law.


She began her career in the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office.

Later, she was recruited to the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office and later to the City Attorney of San Francisco’s office, respectively.

She was elected district attorney of San Francisco in the year 2003 and later, the attorney general of California in 2010.

She is the daughter of immigrant parents.

Her Jamaican father is a professor emeritus at Stanford University and an American economist. Her mother was a cancer researcher from India. Her parents were active in the Civil Rights movement. They divorced when she was 7 years old.

Her father Donald Harris is an American economist and professor emeritus at Stanford University. He is the author of economics monograph Capital Accumulation and Income Distribution, published in 1978, by Stanford University Press. He married to Shyamala Gopalan an American biologist in July 1963.

Harris Against Death Penalty

She insisted on life imprisonment without parole. According to her, it’s a better and more cost-effective punishment than the death penalty. She pledged never to seek the death penalty.

She grew up going to both a Black Baptist church and a Hindu temple

She used to attend the Hindi mandir with her mother. She used to sang in the choir in the black baptist church.

False CLAIM: Harris is not eligible to serve as president

Some people claimed that she is not eligible for the position of president, as her parents were immigrants. If Biden (she‘s Biden’s running mate) fails to serve full term as president his successor will be Nancy Pelosi and not Harris.

But, she is a natural born United States citizen and she is naturally eligible for this position. Some Facebook users are spreading a wrong claim that if Biden fails to serve his term Nancy would be the next in line to serve as the president.
